Tirupur: A male elephant aged about 11, died near Udumalpet on Thursday after falling into a canal.

N. S. Manohar, forest veterinary officer, who conducted the autopsy on the elephant, told The Hindu that the pachyderm slipped into the contour canal carrying water from Sarkarpathy reservoir to Thirumoorthy dam and drowned after suffering head injuries in the fall.

Tusks were removed from the carcass soon after the post-mortem examination was held. “These tusks will be handed over to the forest treasury at Chennai soon,” Dr. Manohar said.
