குட்டி யானை

கோவை மாவட்டம், மேட்டுப்பாளையத்தை அடுத்த ஓடந்துறை காப்புகாட்டில் கடந்த 13-ந் தேதி அதிகாலை காட்டுயானைகள் கூட்டமாக வந்தன. அதில் ஒரு பெண் யானை, குட்டியை ஈன்றது. சிறிது நேரத்தில் அங்கு ஆட்கள் நடமாட்டம் அதிகரித்ததால் அந்த யானை கூட்டம் வனப்பகுதிக்குள் சென்று விட்டது.

பிறந்து சில மணி நேரத்தில், அந்த குட்டி யானையை தவிக்க விட்டுவிட்டு தாய் யானையும் வனப்பகுதிக்குள் சென்று விட்டது. வனப்பகுதியில் குட்டி யானை தள்ளாடியபடி நடந்து தவிப்பதை பார்த்த அந்த பகுதியை சேர்ந்த பொதுமக்கள் வனத்துறையினருக்கு தகவல் கொடுத்தனர்.

தேடுதல் வேட்டை

தகவல் அறிந்ததும் வனத்துறை அதிகாரிகள் உள்பட 50-க்கும் வன ஊழியர்கள் அங்கு விரைந்து சென்று குட்டி யானையை மீட்டனர். மிகவும் சோர்வாக காணப்பட்ட குட்டி யானைக்கு இளநீரில் பால் பவுடர், குளூகோஸ் கலந்து சிறிய குழாய் மூலம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது.

மேலும் குட்டியானையை அதன் தாய் யானையுடன் சேர்க்க வனத்துறையினர் பல்வேறு குழுக்களாக பிரிந்து சென்று வனப்பகுதியில் தீவிர தேடுதல் வேட்டை நடத்தினார்கள். அப்போது சுமார் 2 கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரத்தில் யானைகள் கூட்டம் இருப்பது தெரியவந்தது.

கண்டுகொள்ளாத யானைகள்

இதையொட்டி வனச்சரக அலுவலர் நசீர் மற்றும் வனத்துறை ஊழியர்கள், 75 கிலோ எடையுள்ள குட்டி யானையை அந்த பகுதிக்கு தூக்கிச் சென்றனர். யானைகள் நின்றிருந்த இடம் அருகே 50 அடி தூரத்தில் குட்டியானையை வனத்துறையினர் கொண்டுபோய் விட்டனர். யானைகள் கூட்டத்தை கண்டதும் குட்டியானை அங்கும், இங்கும் ஓடியது.

அப்போது குட்டியானையை நோக்கி வந்த யானை கூட்டம் திடீரென்று அதனை கண்டு கொள்ளாமல் பின்வாங்கி வனப்பகுதிக்குள் சென்று விட்டது. குட்டியானையும் யானை கூட்டத்தை பின்தொடர்ந்து செல்லாமல் அங்கேயே நின்றுவிட்டது.

தேடும் முயற்சி கைவிடப்பட்டது

இதனால் ஏமாற்றம் அடைந்த வனத்துறையினர் மீண்டும் குட்டி யானையை காப்புக்காடு பகுதிக்கு கொண்டு வந்தனர். அந்த பகுதியில் யானைகள் கூட்டம் நடமாட்டம் உள்ளதா என்று நேற்று முன்தினம் இரவு வரை கண்காணித்தனர்.

நேற்று காலை வரை குட்டி யானையை தேடியும் யானைகள் கூட்டம் எதுவும் அந்த பகுதிக்கு வரவில்லை. இதனால் குட்டியானையை தாய் யானையுடன் சேர்க்கும் முயற்சியை வனத்துறையினர் கைவிட்டனர்.

சொகுசு காரில்

பின்னர் முதன்மை தலைமை வனப்பாதுகாவலர் மற்றும் தலைமை வனஉயிரின காப்பாளர் ஆர்.சுந்தர்ராஜ் அறிவுரையின் பேரில் பெண் குட்டி யானையை சொகுசு கார் மூலம் வண்டலூர் உயிரியல் பூங்காவிற்கு அனுப்பி வைக்க முடிவு செய்யப்பட்டது.

நேற்று காலை வனப்பகுதியில் இருந்த குட்டியானை மேட்டுப்பாளையம்-கோத்தகிரி ரோட்டில் உள்ள அரசு மரக்கிடங்கு வளாகத்திற்கு கொண்டு வரப்பட்டது. பயணத்தின்போது காயம் ஏதும் ஏற்படாமல் இருக்க காரின் உள்பகுதியில் வாழை சருகுகளை துணிகளில் கட்டி மெத்தை போன்று அமைத்தனர்.

பூஜை செய்து அனுப்பி வைத்தனர்

காலை 8 மணி அளவில், குட்டி யானைக்கு மாலை அணிவித்து தேங்காய் உடைக்கப்பட்டு சிறப்பு பூஜை செய்யப்பட்டது. பூஜையின்போது குட்டியானை துதிக்கையால் அருகில் இருந்தவர்களின் கால்களை வருடியது.

பூஜை முடிந்ததும் குட்டியானை காரில் ஏற்றப்பட்டு வண்டலூருக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டது. குட்டியானைக்கு தேவையான உணவு பொருட்களுடன், சில வன ஊழியர்களும் பாதுகாப்பாக அந்த காரில் வந்தனர்.

வண்டலூர் பூங்கா வந்தது

வழியில் குட்டி யானைக்கு பயண களைப்பை போக்குவதற்காக 2 மணி நேரத்திற்கு ஒரு முறை இளநீரில் குளுக்கோஸ் கலந்து கொடுத்தனர். சுமார் 9 மணி நேர பயணத்திற்கு பிறகு நேற்று மாலை 5.20 மணிக்கு குட்டி யானை வண்டலூர் உயிரியல் பூங்கா வந்து சேர்ந்தது.

இதேபோல் தாயை பிரிந்து வந்த சில குட்டி யானைகள் உள்ள இடத்திற்கு சென்று, காரில் இருந்த குட்டி யானையை பத்திரமாக கீழே இறக்கினார்கள். புதிய வரவு குட்டி யானையை, பூங்காவின் உதவி இயக்குனர் ஆர்.எஸ்.சத்தியமூர்த்தி மற்றும் வன ஊழியர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் வரவேற்றனர்.

முதலில் சற்று திகைத்து நின்ற குட்டி யானை, ஏற்கனவே தாயை பிரிந்து வந்து உள்ள குட்டி யானைகளை பார்த்தவுடன் அதன் அருகே போய் நின்றது

பாசப்பிணைப்பு

புதிய குட்டியை பார்த்ததும், பூங்காவில் இருந்த 1 வயது உரிகம் என்ற குட்டி யானை தனது உடன் பிறந்த குட்டி போல பாவித்து தனது துதிக் கையினால் வாஞ்சையுடன் தடவிக்கொடுத்தது. இந்த காட்சி அங்கு இருந்த அதிகாரிகளுக்கு நெகிழ்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

பின்னர் 2 யானை குட்டிகளும் நீண்ட நேரமாக தங்களது துதிக் கைகளால் அரவணைத்தபடி நின்றன. அதைக்கண்டு வன ஊழியர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். பின்னர் குட்டி யானையை பூங்கா மருத்துவர் திருமுருகன் பரிசோதனை செய்தார்.

24 மணி நேரமும் கண்காணிப்பு

ஏற்கனவே யானை குட்டிகள் உள்ள பாரமரிப்பு இடத்தில் வைத்து இதை பாராமரிப்பது என்று அதிகாரிகள் முடிவு செய்தனர். இதன்படி ஊழியர்கள் இதனை 24 மணி நேரமும் கண்காணித்து வருகின்றனர்.

தற்போது குளிர் அதிகமாக இருப்பதால் இந்த பெண் குட்டி யானை இரவில் தூங்கும் போது கம்பளி போர்வை போர்த்தப்படும். நாளை முதல் மற்ற குட்டி யானைகளுடன் பழக விடப்படும்.

4 குட்டி யானைகள்

இந்த புதிய வரவுடன் சேர்த்து பூங்காவில் 7 யானைகள் உள்ளன. இவற்றில் பெரிய யானையின் பெயர் அஸ்வினி (வயது 28), அதற்கடுத்துள்ள யானையின் பெயர் அபிநயா (8) மற்ற நான்கும் குட்டி யானைகள் ஆகும்.

இவற்றுக்கு சரவணன் (2), நரசிம்மன் (2), உரிகம் (1), கிரி (9 மாதம்) என்பதாகும். இந்த 4 யானை குட்டிகளும் பல்வேறு இடங்களில் இருந்து தாயை பிரிந்து வந்தவை என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

காட்டு யானைகள் கூட்டம்

கோவை வனக்கோட்டத்திற்கு உட்பட்ட மேட்டுப்பாளையம், சிறுமுகை, காரமடை, பெரியநாயக்கன்பாளையம், மற்றும் அதனை சுற்றியுள்ள அடர்ந்த வனப்பகுதிகளில் காட்டு யானைகள் கூட்டம் கூட்டமாக நடமாடி வருகின்றன.

மேட்டுப்பாளையம் அருகேயுள்ள ஓடந்துறை காப்பு காடு வனப்பகுதியில் நேற்று முன்தினம் இரவு காட்டு யானைகள் நீர்நிலைகளை தேடி கூட்டம், கூட்டமாக வந்தன.

குட்டியானை தவிப்பு

யானைக்கூட்டத்தில் இருந்த ஒரு பெண் யானை நேற்று அதிகாலை 5.30 மணிக்கு அழகான பெண் குட்டி யானையை ஈன்றெடுத்தது. அந்த பகுதியில் ஆட்கள் நடமாடும் சத்தம் கேட்டதால் காட்டு யானைகள் கூட்டத்துடன் இருந்த தாய் யானை ஈன்றெடுத்த குட்டி யானையை அங்கேயே விட்டு விட்டு வனப்பகுதிக்குள் சென்று விட்டது.

தாய் யானையை விட்டு பிரிந்த குட்டி யானை வனப்பகுதிக்குள் எங்கு செல்வது என்று தெரியாமல் அங்கும், இங்கும் அலைந்து நடமாட முடியாமல் தவித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. இதைப்பார்த்த அந்த பகுதியை சேர்ந்த பொதுமக்கள் சிறுமுகை வனத்துறையினருக்கு தகவல் தெரிவித்தனர்.

அதிகாரிகள் விரைந்தனர்

இதையடுத்து வனத்துறை ஊழியர்கள் சம்பவ இடத்துக்கு விரைந்தனர். இதற்கிடையில் குட்டி யானையை பார்க்க அங்கு திரண்ட பொதுமக்களை கலைந்து செல்லுமாறு வனத்துறையினர் கூறினார்கள்.

பின்னர் வனத்துறையினர் வனப்பகுதிக்குள் பல்வேறு குழுக்களாக பிரிந்து சென்று காட்டு யானைகள் கூட்டமாக நடமாடுகிறதா? அந்த கூட்டத்தில் தாய் யானை இருக்கிறதா என்பதை கண்டறிய தேடினார்கள். மாவட்ட வன அலுவலர் திருநாவுக்கரசு அந்த குட்டி யானையை பார்வையிட்டார். அதை தாய் யானையுடன் சேர்ப்பதற்கான வழிமுறைகள் குறித்து வனத்துறை ஊழியர்களுக்கு அறிவுரை வழங்கினார்.

குட்டி யானை பராமரிப்பு

பிறந்த ஒரு சில மணி நேரமேயான குட்டி பெண் யானை தாய் யானையின் பராமரிப்பு இல்லாததால் மிகவும் சோர்ந்து காணப்பட்டது. இதனால் வன கால்நடை டாக்டர் மனோகரன் குட்டி யானைக்கு சிறிய ரப்பர் குழாய் மூலம் இளநீர் வழங்கினார். அதன் பிறகு இளநீருடன் குளுக்கோசும் கலந்து கொடுக்கப்பட்டது.

குட்டி யானையை தேடி காட்டு யானைகளுடன் தாய் யானையும் வரக்கூடும் என்பதால் குட்டி யானையை வனப்பகுதியிலேயே நிறுத்தி பராமரிப்பது என வனத்துறையினர் முடிவு செய்தனர். அப்படி தாய் யானை வராவிட்டால் வனத்துறையினர் வனப்பகுதிக்குள் சென்று யானை கூட்டங்களில் எது தாய் யானை என கண்டறிந்து அங்கு சென்று குட்டி யானையை விட்டு விடுவது எனவும் முடிவு செய்தனர்.

இந்த 2 வழிமுறைகளிலும் குட்டி யானையை தாய் யானையுடன் சேர்க்க முடியாவிட்டால் முதுமலை அல்லது டாப்சிலிப் முகாமுக்கு கொண்டு சென்று விடுவது என்றும் வனத்துறையினர் முடிவு செய்துள்ளனர்.

DEHRADUN: Law takes a backseat when it comes to religious sentimentality in India. In a grave violation of law, more than 31 male buffaloes and 135 goats were sacrificed in a temple premises to appease Goddess Aradhya Devi allegedly by her devotees during a day-long annual fair at Bunkhal village in Pauri district. 

Police sources said although the practice of mass animal sacrifice was a cognizable offence under Prevention of Cruelty Act, it had been going on for several years right under the nose of senior Uttarakhand administrative and police authorities including Pauri District Magistrate (DM) Dilip Jawalkar and SP Pushpak Jyoti in Dehradun and Pauri. 

Police sources said senior administrative and police authorities decided to put a check on mass animal sacrifice at the Bunkhal temple after members from different animal lovers' organizations and groups who find the practice "inhuman, brutal and cruel" raised their voices. 

The people of Uttarakhand said they were shocked to see that despite their crusade against this age-old practice of mass animal sacrifice, the Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank government had not bothered to impose a blanket ban on this inhuman practice. Instead the government offered an excuse that "the practice of mass animal sacrifice had been handed down from centuries ago and was a part of religious rituals and so it was not possible to check it to by force." 

Residents of nearby villages including Chorikhal in Pauri district, told TOI that as per this practice, the animals are first taken to nearby Chorikhal village where vermilion is applied on their foreheads. Then they are taken to Bunkhal temple for "sacrifice." They are slaughtered one by one, with sharp-edged weapons -mini and huge daggers (Khunkhri and Farsa) -by the villagers while offering their special prayers to the goddess. 

Pauri DM Jawalkar and SP Jyoti said they had taken more than 12 goats and 23 buffaloes into their custody which were being taken for sacrifice and lodged FIR against all those responsible for mass animal sacrifice. 

The officials said they had yet to identify and ascertain the exact number of persons involved in mass animal sacrifice. 

"They all will be named in FIR lodged in the police station for breach of peace under section 151 of CRPC and under prevention of cruelty act as soon they are identified", the officers said. 

Himachal farmers load guns for 'Operation Monkey'

SHIMLA: The man-animal conflict has turned ugly in Himachal Pradesh. Farmers in several villages have set aside their farm implements and loaded their guns -- to shoot down monkeys from Friday as the simians have been destroying their crops and fruits. 

Under 'Operation Monkey', hundreds of farmers have procured permits from the state wildlife authority to kill the wild animals causing them losses, a move that has angered wildlife activists. 

"More than 3,000 farmers across the state have managed to procure permits to kill the wild animals - mainly monkeys, wild boar and blue bull. They will hunt the animals till Dec 23," Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, state convenor of farmers' outfit Kheti Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (KBSS), told IANS. 

However, wildlife officials claim that only selective killing of animals has been permitted. 

"As per our information, less than 300 permits have been issued by the department till yesterday (Thursday)," said Chief Wildlife Warden A.K. Gulati. 

"Permission has only been given to shoot the animals in the fields. Our range officers are monitoring the killings. There would be selective killing and no mass culling. Moreover, the aim of using the ammunition is to shoo away the animals from the fields," he said. 

S.S. Chandel, a farmer of Dehna village in Cheog panchayat, some 30 km from Shimla, said villagers have pooled in money to buy ammunition and that seven guns have been deployed in nearby villages to kill the animals, mainly monkeys. 

"The villagers have procured 38 permits. By pooling money we have jointly procured ammunition and the shooters have been deployed. We will kill the monkeys on sighting them," Chandel said over telephone. 

But their decision to kill the animals has led to widespread criticism from animal protection groups. 

"We will discourage any form of mass culling or the indiscriminate issuing of gun licenses. Himachal Pradesh is also known as 'Dev Bhoomi' or land of gods. The state must uphold this tradition and marry it with modern scientific tools of wildlife management," said Arpan Sharma, a spokesperson for Delhi-based Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations. 

N.G. Jayasimha, US-based Humane Society's campaign manager in India, said: "We urge the farmers to be more humane to the animals." 

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal informed the state assembly Dec 6 that the monkey menace had reached an alarming proportion and that the government had authorised the chief wildlife warden to allow their hunting along with the wild boar and the blue bull. 

"To check their rising numbers, the government has sterilised 23,428 monkeys so far. The sterilised monkeys were later released in their natural habitats," he said. 

The wildlife wing estimates that over 900,000 farmers mainly in Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Mandi and Kangra districts were affected by wild animals. Monkeys, numbering over 300,000, mainly target cereal and fruit crops, causing extensive damage. 

Tanwar of the farmers' outfit, however, said the state government was not serious about addressing the simian menace. 

"If the government is serious, then it can hire trained shooters to eliminate the problematic monkeys," he said. 

Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in the state, providing direct employment to 69 percent of its workforce.

மிளா மான் குட்டி

திண்டுக்கல் மாவட்டம் பழனியை அடுத்த ஆயக்குடி சட்டப்பாறை பகுதி மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சி மலை அடிவாரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இப்பகுதியில் மான் விழுந்தான் ஓடை என்ற ஓடை செல்கிறது. மழைக்காலம் என்பதால் ஓடையில் தற்போது தண்ணீர் செல்கிறது.

இந்த ஓடை அருகில் பழைய ஆயக்குடியைச் சேர்ந்த சிவசுப்பிரமணியன் என்பவரது தோட்டம் உள்ளது. இத்தோட்டத்தில் காட்டு யானைகள், பன்றிகள் உள்ளிட்ட வன விலங்குகளிடம் இருந்து விவசாய பயிர்களை காக்கும் வகையில் சோலார் வேலி அமைக்கும் பணி நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. இதற்காக தோட்டத்தின் வேலிப் பகுதியில் உள்ள புதர்களை அப்புறப்படுத்தும் பணியில் நேற்று தொழிலாளர்கள் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

அப்போது மான் விழுந்தான் ஓடையில் உள்ள புதரில் பிறந்து சில மாதங்களே ஆன மிளா மான் குட்டி ஒன்று நடுங்கியபடி நின்று கொண்டு இருப்பதைக் கண்டனர். அந்த மான் குட்டி தாயைப் பிரிந்து வந்து தனியாக நின்று கொண்டு இருந்தது. இதைத்தொடர்ந்து தொழிலாளர்கள் அந்த மான் குட்டியை பத்திரமாக மீட்டு தோட்டத்திற்கு கொண்டு வந் தனர். மேலும் இது குறித்து ஒட்டன்சத்திரம் வனத்துறையினருக்கு தகவல் கொடுத்தனர்.

ஒப்படைப்பு

ஒட்டன்சத்திரம் வனச்சரகர் சேதுராமன் அறிவுரையின் பேரில் வனக் காப்பாளர் மரிய ஜோசப் செல்வராஜ், வனக்காவலர் கணேசன் மற்றும் வனத்துறையினர் தோட்டத்திற்கு விரைந்து வந்தனர். அவர்களிடம் மான் குட்டியை விவசாயிகள் ஒப்படைத்தனர். இதன்பிறகு வனத்துறையினர் மான் குட்டியை வனப்பகுதியில் கொண்டு சென்று விட்டனர்.

A farmer Narayanan (28) of Varadegoundan Thotti, village near Anchetti, was held by the forest officials on Thursday afternoon.

District Forest Officer A.K. Ulaganathan told The Hindu that according to the post mortem report the elephant had haemorrhage and cavity in the brain with multiple fractures in the head.

The farmer will be produced before a local court in Denkanikottai on Friday and will be lodged in the Salem Central Prison. The muscle loading country-made gun used by the farmer was also recovered.

According to the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, the accused may be imprisoned for a minimum period of three years if the charges are proved.

To prevent the animals entering into the human habitations, the villagers along the Reserve Forest were provided with Heavy Duty Torch Lights and Crackers.Mr. Ulaganathan said that the Forest Department is taking all efforts to get compensation for the crop loss to farmers in this region.

He made an appeal to the farmers not to attack the wild animals.

The Department has also taken up initiatives to disburse compensation to the farmers for crop loss in this region. The compensation would be distributed during next week, he added.

டி.கல்லுப்பட்டி, பேரைïர் பகுதிகளில் சுமார் 400க்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஆடுகள் காணை நோய் தாக்கி பலியாகியுள்ளன. நோய்பாதித்து சாகும் நிலையில் உள்ள ஆடுகளை இறைச்சிகடைகளுக்கு விற்பதால், அந்த இறைச்சியை சாப்பிடும் மனிதர்களுக்கும் நோய் ஏற்படும் அபாயம் உள்ளது.

ஆடுவளர்ப்பு

மதுரை மாவட்டம், டி.கல்லுப்பட்டி, பேரைïர் பகுதிகளில் விவசாயத்திற்கு அடுத்ததாக ஆடு வளர்க்கும் தொழிலில் ஏராளமானோர் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். டி.கல்லுப்பட்டி ஒன்றியத்தில் உள்ள முத்தப்பன்பட்டி, சின்னையாபாளையம், சோலைப்பட்டி விலக்கு, டி.கல்லுப்பட்டி என்.ஜி.ஓ. காலனி, காரைக்கேணி உள்ளிட்ட பல கிராமங்களில் ஏழை விவசாயிகள் ஆடுவளர்ப்பு தொழிலில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர்.

ஆடுகளை இந்த பகுதியில் உள்ள கரிசல் காட்டில் மேய்ச்சலுக்கு விடுவார்கள்.

கடந்த ஒரு மாதமாக தொடர் மழை பெய்து வருகிறது. பொதுவாகவே மழைக்காலங்களில் கால்நடைகள் நோய் தாக்குதலுக்கு ஆளாவது தவிர்க்க முடியாதது.

காணை நோய்

முறையாக சிகிச்சை அளித்தால் மட்டுமே மழை காலத்தில் கால்நடைகளை நோயில் இருந்து காப்பாற்ற முடியும். சமீபத்தில் பெய்த மழை காரணமாக கரிசல்காட்டில் தண்ணீர் தேங்கி நிற்கிறது. இந்த தண்ணீரில் மேய்ச்சலுக்கு செல்லும் ஆடுகள் நடந்து செல்வதால், கால்களில் புண்கள் உருவாகின்றன. கால்குளம்புகளில் புண் ஏற்பட்டு காணை நோய் தாக்குகிறது. ஆடுகள் நடக்க முடியாமல் தடுமாறி சுருண்டு விழுகின்றன.

தொடர்ந்து வாயிலும் புண்கள் உருவாகின்றன. இதனால் ஆடுகள் இரையெடுக்க முடியாமல் பாதிக்கப்படுகின்றன. ஆடுவளர்ப்போரும் தங்களுக்கு தெரிந்த மருந்து, மாத்திரைகள், ஊசிகளைபோட்டு ஆடுகளை காப்பாற்ற முயற்சிக்கின்றனர். ஆனால் எந்த நடவடிக்கையும் பலனளிப்பதில்லை.

மரணம்

கால் புண்கள், வாயிலும் புண்கள் என்ற நிலையில் நடைபிணமாக மாறும் ஆடுகள் இறுதியில் சுருண்டு விழுந்து செத்துவிடுகின்றன. டி.கல்லுப்பட்டி என்.ஜி.ஓ. காலனியை சேர்ந்த வடிவேல் என்பவரது 15 ஆடுகளும், பூங்காவனம் என்பவரின் 15 ஆடுகளும், சின்னபாளையத்தை சேர்ந்த சமயன் என்பவரின் 16 ஆடுகளும், முத்தப்பன்பட்டி மாரியப்பனின் 8 ஆடுகளும், முத்தாண்டியின் 12 ஆடுகளும், சோலைப்பட்டி லாங்கர் என்பவரின் 10 ஆடுகள் உள்பட சுமார் 400க்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஆடுகள் இறந்து விட்டன. மேலும் பல ஆடுகள் இறக்கும் நிலையில் உள்ளன.

செத்த ஆடுகளுக்கு விலை கிடைப்பதில்லை என்பதால் அவற்றை ஆங்காங்கே நீர்நிலைகளிலும், ஆற்றிலும், சோளக்காட்டில் குழிதோண்டியும் போட்டுவிடுகின்றனர்.

குற்றுயிரும், குலைஉயிருமாக இருக்கும் ஆடுகளை கிடைத்தவரை லாபம் என்று சிலர், இறைச்சிக்கடைகளுக்கு விற்றுவிடுகின்றனர். அவற்றை ரூ.50, 100 கொடுத்து வாங்கும் ஒருசில கடைக்காரர்கள் ஆட்டை அறுத்து இறைச்சியாக விற்றுவிடுகின்றனர்.

நோய் அபாயம்

அந்த இறைச்சியை சாப்பிடும் மனிதர்களும் நோய் பாதிப்புக்கு ஆளாகும் அபாயம் உள்ளது. இந்த பகுதியில் மட்டும் கடந்த சில நாட்களில் சுமார் 400க்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஆடுகள் இறந்துள்ளன. நோய் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட நூற்றுக்கணக்கான ஆடுகள் குறைந்த விலைக்கு இறைச்சிக்கடைகளுக்கு விற்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இதுகுறித்து வடிவேல் என்பவர் கூறும்போது, தொடர்மழையால் கால்நடைகள் அனைத்தும் நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. நாங்களும் எங்களுக்குத்தெரிந்த அளவிற்கு வைத்தியம் பார்க்கிறோம். இதுவரை எனக்கு 15 ஆடுகள் இறந்துவிட்டன. நோய் பாதித்த ஆடுகளை தனியாக பிரித்து வைத்துள்ளோம். ரூ.4 ஆயிரம் வரை ஊசி, மருந்துகளுக்கு செலவழித்துள்ளேன். இருப்பினும் ஆடுகளை காப்பாற்ற முடியவில்லை` என்றார்.

இப்பகுதியில் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான ஆடுகள் நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. எனவே கால்நடைதுறையினர் நோய் தடுப்பு நடவடிக்கைகளில் இறங்க வேண்டும் என்று அப்பகுதி கால்நடை வளர்ப்போர் கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளனர்.

பிரேசில், ஜெர்மனி, அமெரிக்கா, இலங்கை, தாய்லாந்து போன்ற நாடுகளில் இருந்து பல்வேறு வகையான நாய்கள் கலந்து கொள்கின்றன. டாபர்மேன், கிரேட் டேன்ஸ், லேப்ராடர் நாய்கள், ராஜபாளையம் நாய்கள், போலீஸ் துறையில் உள்ள நாய்கள் மட்டுமல்லாமல் மராட்டிய மாநிலம், பிஜாப்பூரில் இருந்து தனியாக பஸ் பிடித்து 30 வேட்டை நாய்களும் கொண்டு வரப்படுகின்றன. சர்வதேச நடுவர்கள் குழு, சிறந்த நாயை தேர்வு செய்யும். அந்த நாயின் உரிமையாளருக்கு சுழற்கோப்பை வழங்கப்படும்.

Udhagamandalam: The need to evolve ways to reduce dependency on animals for laboratory experiments was emphasized by O.P. Joshi, Deputy Secretary, Committee for Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals, here on Wednesday.

He was inaugurating an Indo-European symposium on Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing organized by the Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council - Centre of Relevance and Excellence (TIFAC-CORE) of the JSS College of Pharmacy and the France-based Skin Ethic Laboratories and Crea Cell.

In his address, he pointed out that every year over 100 million animals are used in laboratory experiments worldwide. The experiments carried out on animals are for fundamental research, biomedical research, product testing, education and training and warfare research.

He contended that the rights of animals also should be respected.

Mruthyunjaya P.Kulenur, Registrar, JSS University, Mysore, who presided, said that steps should be taken to check exploitation of animals.

Piere Yues Perche, Chief Executive Officer, Crea Cell, France said that cell lines have been developed for assessment of pre-clinical cardiac risk. The Director, TIFAC-CORE, M.J.Nanjan, said that among the animals used for experiments are cats, dogs, rats, mice, rabbits, fish, birds and monkeys.

A large number of rats, mice and rabbits are used in the laboratory experiments because they are easy to handle and cheap to maintain.

While many of the animal protection societies are for replacement, some are for reduction. The Principal, JSS College of Pharmacy, K. Elango, proposed a vote of thanks.

Udhagamandalam: Social fencing will be of considerable help in carrying forward the ongoing campaign to save the tiger, says the Field Director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Rajiv K. Srivatsava, here on Sunday.

Inaugurating an art exhibition titled, ‘The roar is about to be silenced,' he said that though the government is doing a great deal to conserve tigers much more needed to be done. People should extend their cooperation, he said adding that steps should be taken to combat environment-related problems.

Forest cover

The present 22 per cent forest cover in India should be increased to 33 per cent.

Pointing out that the Mudumalai landscape is one of the finest habitats for tigers, he said that the people of the Nilgiris district are also sensitive to the environment. More and more people are extending support to the Project Tiger. Consequently 19 eco-development committees have been formed in and around Mudumalai. Poachers have been kept at bay.

Man-wild animal conflict is not a new phenomenon. Hence with self-discipline it can be prevented from escalating. The government has enhanced the compensation for death of human beings and domestic animals because of attacks by wild animals. Even for crop loss caused by wild animals, the compensation has been increased. He said people in general and students and non governmental organisations in particular should participate the ‘save the tiger' movement.

The organiser of the exhibition, Sumathi Thiagarajan, welcomed the gathering. The president, Junior Chamber, Udhagamandalam, D. Vishwanath, said that people are ready to help carry forward the campaign.

The screening of a documentary ‘Truth About Tigers' made by Shekar Dhatadri, a question-answer session in which students of the Breeks School participated, and a signature campaign marked the occasion.

Chennai:  It's a traditional part of Pongal celebrations in Tamil Nadu. Jallikattu - a bull-taming sport - has been objected to strongly by animal rights' activists.

Now, the Supreme Court has slammed the Tamil Nadu government for a mercenary approach to Jallikattu by allowing the event to run for five months. The court wants the event to last for two months.  "Jallikattu has become an industry and people are making money. This is normally done during Pongal. How can you stretch it for five months upto May?" asked the court.

Last year, under pressure from the Animal Welfare Board, the Tamil Nadu government limited the bullfight run from January to May; organizers are required to deposit 2 lakhs as compensation for those injured during the event - a common fallout of the ritual. The Supreme Court has suggested that amount be raised significantly to 20 lakhs.

The state government has to respond within a month to the court's suggestions and observations.

Jallikattu is most popular in the Madurai district and attracts huge local audiences as well as foreign tourists.

The term Jallikattu comes from the term "Salli" kassu (coins) and "Kattu" (meaning a package) tied to the horns of the bulls as the prize money.

எண்பது வகையான விலங்குகளை வளர்க்கும் பிரிட்டிஷ் குடும்பம்

லண்டன் : பிரிட்டனில் வசிக்கும் குடும்பம் ஒன்று, பாம்பு, பல்லி உள்பட 80 வகையான விலங்குகளை தங்களது வீட்டில் வளர்த்து வருகின்றனர். பிரிட்டனில் லீட்ஸ் அருகே, மோர்லியில் வசிக்கும் ஆலன் ஹெவிட் (44), ஹெத்தர் (40) தம்பதி தங்கள் வீட்டில், 20 விஷமுள்ள, விஷமற்ற பாம்புகள், விஷ சிலந்திகள், 25 பாலுட்டி விலங்குகள், பறவைகள் உள்ளிட்ட 80 விலங்குகளை வளர்த்து வருகின்றனர். அதில், முதலை, பல்லி, தவளை, கீரி, ஆமை, மலைப்பாம்பு, கிளி, உள்ளிட்ட 30 வகையான விலங்குகளை இவர்கள் வளர்க்கின்றனர்.

இந்த தம்பதிக்கு அபிகெய்ல் (17), கிரேஸ் (15), எட்வர்ட் (10) ஆகிய மூன்று பிள்ளைகள் உள்ளனர். அவர்களும் இதே வீட்டில், இந்த விலங்குகளோடுதான் வசிக்கின்றனர். கிட்டத்தட்ட விலங்குகள் சரணாலயம் போன்ற இந்த வீட்டில் உள்ள விலங்குகளின் மொத்த மதிப்பு 14 லட்ச ரூபாய். இந்த விலங்குகளை அறக்கட்டளை ஒன்றை ஏற்படுத்தி, அதன் மூலம் அவற்றை பராமரிக்க அவர்கள் திட்டமிட்டு வருகின்றனர். இதற்காக, அவர்கள் விண்ணப்பித்துள்ளனர்.

Coimbatore: The Central Zoological Authority (CZA) has served a notice on the Coimbatore Corporation seeking details regarding the proposal to shift the Corporation Zoo from the present cramped premises before the end of December.

The details should be on the proposed site, project report and time frame for getting the infrastructure ready for shifting the zoo.

The Corporation sources have confirmed that a letter has been received in this regard.

The zoo, established in 1965 even before the wildlife protection legislations came into being, is functioning on a 4.62-acre.

The zoo has 26 reptiles, 85 mammals and 219 birds. In addition, there are 11 deer, 26 bonnet macaques, six foxes, six large crocodiles and eight smaller ones and three camels and 11 snakes.

The CZA during its inspection in 2004 found the land inadequate to provide an ideal habitat to the wildlife in captivity and asked for shifting the zoo to a spacious place.

The authorities had been on the job of identifying the land for quite some time.

The places identified earlier were either dropped or rejected by various agencies stating that they were not conducive to have a zoological park.

Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra, Deputy Commissioner S. Prabhakaran and Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.R. Ashok zeroed in on 26 acres at Othakkal Mandapam on Pollachi Road and another 25 acres at Kalapatti, both belonging to the HR&CE Department.

Proposals

The proposals have been sent to the Government for working out the modalities for utilising the land.

The CZA is also monitoring the breeding of the species in captivity. As the authorities are struggling to provide arrangements for the comfortable accommodation of the species, the CZA is likely to order closure of the zoo and take away the animals.

However, the Corporation machinery is on top gear now to submit the details and obtain approval for any one of the sites, so that Coimbatore does not lose the zoo.
