CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will instruct people rearing cattle to fit diaphragm chambers before letting waste in the sewer, said Mayor M. Subramanian.

Even though the civic body has taken action against 5,419 persons in the past four years who allowed the cattle to roam on the city roads, the Corporation does not have control over the number of such animals reared in the city.

The civic body has collected a total fine amount of Rs.79.53 lakh from the cattle-owners.

“A number of people who are rearing cows are letting the waste in the sewer without fixing diaphragm chamber. This is one of the reasons for clogging of the sewers in many areas,” said M. Jayaraman, ward committee chairman of Zone 10 (Adyar). He mentioned areas such as South Kesavaperumalpuram, Chinna Karakuttai and Kabalithottam, where such practice was prevalent among residents.

As the civic body along with the Chennai Metrowater has started to take steps towards making sewers free of clogging, it would shortly regulate all similar activities that lead to clogging of sewers, Mr Subramanian said.
