TAMBARAM: Several stray dogs were killed and buried in a residential locality in Perumbakkam Village Panchayat near Tambaram. Members of animal welfare organisations, who were shocked at the incident, said at least 40 dogs were killed, reportedly through lethal injections and buried in Jaya Nagar.
Dawn Williams, Residential General Manager of Blue Cross, Chennai, said residents of Jaya Nagar, Perumbakkam, had informed their city office about the burial of the dogs on a piece of vacant plot over the past couple of days.
While the residents were not sure about the number of animals buried, Mr. Williams suspected at least 40 dogs to have been buried.
Complaint lodged
“We reached the spot in the morning today. The carcasses of a few dogs were partly visible. On digging the spot, we noticed the carcasses of three dogs,” he said. As they wanted to involve the police, Blue Cross members also lodged a formal complaint at Pallikaranai police station.
A team of policemen accompanied the Blue Cross members and in their presence, the carcasses were exhumed.
The exact cause of the deaths and who was behind the killing could be established only after detailed investigations, police said. It was only in October last year that nearly 60 community dogs were killed in Mowlivakkam Village Panchayat, a western suburb near Poonamallee. The practice of catching community dogs, killing and burying them was a clear violation of Supreme Court guidelines and punishable under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and also under Indian Penal Code.
