TIRUNELVELI: Forest Department personnel who were on the lookout for four persons in connection with poisoning of wild boars and killing of sambar (deer) near Papanasam in the district, have arrested one person while intensifying the search for the others.

Forest Department sources said that Arunachalam (45) of Vembaiyapuram was arrested on Saturday and were on the lookout for Mahendran, Narayanan and Paramasivan, all having farms close to the Western Ghats between Manimuthar Dam and Papanasam.

During interrogation, the forest personnel also came to know that Arunachalam had already hunted down a rare monkey variety six months ago. He reportedly told the interrogators that the live electric fence he had erected in his farm by illegally drawing power from the electric poles had killed the sambar while the wild boars succumbed to poison he had kept at various places in his farm.

When the forest personnel visited the farms of the four, they also saw water being illegally diverted from the Tamiraparani to their farms.
